Felicia and I were on our way to elementary camp in West Texas one week ago today. It was July 4th and the little West Texas towns were celebrating in style. We could see the glitter of fireworks as they exploded in a multi-color shower of beauty over the communities. But, as that wonderful show was in progress, we noticed behind the fireworks there was a cloud growing in the west. It was tall and very dark, marching toward us with determination. An especially large and colorful explosion lit the sky, the pride of the person who had carefully packed the exact amount of gun powder in the package. It was as if the fireworks were saying, "not bad, huh?" Then, as though in reply, the sky lit up with a magnificent lightning "spider web" that covered the horizon from one end to the other. God said, "Yes, that's pretty cool, but watch this!"
We sometimes are overly impressed with our mortal strength and accomplishments. We brag about our tall buildings, space ships, financial strength, degrees, and modern society. Then God takes a look and, in one move, thunders with a power that causes the bravest person to tremble. There is just no way we can compete with Him. We can, however, tap into that power and see it flow through us into our world. We can become His pipeline of glory! Clay pots can contain the incredible presence of the God that made them, and pour out the contents on a thirsty world. Oh God, let it be.
Remember what the Psalmist said.
"Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord, to him who rides the ancient skies above, who thunders with mighty voice. Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies. You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to this people. Praise be to God!" Psalm 68:32-35
