The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” I Kings 19:11-13
I got my cup of coffee this morning and went to sit on the patio behind my house. We live fairly close to a busy street with lots of traffic, so I was instantly aware of the busy noise around me. But, as I sipped my coffee, another sound cut through the den of noise. It was the clear, melodic sound of birds singing their morning song. It was beautiful to hear. Soon, I was no longer aware of the street sounds that had so annoyed me earlier. I was entranced by the beauty of the new song I heard.
As we go through our day today, we have a choice of what to listen to. We can hear the shrill cacophony of a busy world if we choose. Or, we can tune in and listen to the whisper of God's voice. He is speaking, you know. His words of peace and hope fill the air. But, we will have to lean in and focus carefully on that voice. We might even learn a new song.
