Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6
The words translated "hunger" and "thirst" in this passage are very descriptive. It is not an image of someone who is in need of a little snack. The imagery is that of a person who is nearly starved to death. It is a person who is so thirsty that their whole life's focus is finding water. When I am that hungry and thirsty for God and His will for my life, I am filled, or satisfied as other translations read. The other side of that coin is that if I am hungry and thirsty for anything other than God and His will for my life, I will go through my days without ever knowing what it is to be truly satisfied.
There is a story told of a young preacher who was seeking a deeper walk with God. He asked an older pastor who obviously was in a joyful relationship with Christ to take him to the place where he found that intimacy. The old preacher said he would. They drove a long way out of town and got out of the car next to a large wilderness area. They walked for over and hour. "Are we getting close?” asked the young preacher? "It's not far.", was the response. That happened several times on this hike through the hot, humid woods.
Finally the young man grabbed the shoulder of the older pastor and spun him around. "I can't take it anymore. I've got to know Him. I can't take another step without knowing Him!" "Yep", said the old preacher, "this is the place."
May God lead us all to that place in our lives where we are hungry and thirsty for Him.
