“You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!” John 5:39
In this statement, Jesus reminds us of one of the most important lessons he ever taught. He did not come to this earth to establish a new religion. His purpose was not to offer new rules. He’s not particularly interested how we structure our liturgies. The heart and soul of His ministry is relationship. Jesus came not to give us words, but to be the Word. The words will help us know about God, but the Word will help us know Him.
As a boy, I recall sitting in my front yard one fall with a magnifying glass and a dry leaf. I was amazed at what happened when the diffused light that was all around me was concentrated and focused on that leaf. The light became fire!
When we as Christians come to realize that Jesus is the one who does that in our lives, we will see the light he has created us to be, burst into the fire of renewal. He is our focus, our passion, our heart. We search the scriptures, not to find information, but to find Him.
